Mercury's Physical Characteristics

The surface of Mercury can reach 840 degrees F. (450 degrees C). Since this planet doesn't have a real atmosphere, night temperatures can drop to minus 275 degrees F (minus 170 degrees C). This temperature swing is more than 1,100 degrees F (600 degree C), which is the greatest in the solar system. Mercury is the smallest planet and it is only slightly larger than Earth's moon. Ice may exist in Mercury's craters. Ice and water vapor was most likely delivered from incoming comets or meteorites. Mercury is the second densest planet in the solar system.
