Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Therefore; it circles the Sun much quicker than the rest of the planets. Mercury got its name from the Roman swift-footed messenger god.
About 5,000 years ago, Mercury was often associated with Nabu, the god of writing. Mercury was also given separate names for its appearance as a morning star and evening star. Heraclitus believed that Mercury orbited the Sun, not the Earth.
